Our Story

Maxwell Barlow Lighting was founded at the beginning of 2018 with a mission to provide lighting solutions that generate warmth and ambience, underpinned by the unique identity of each build.

Max began his career in the creative field of events lighting at Starlight Design before going on to join award winning architectural lighting specialists, John Cullen Lighting where he learned his trade from the ground up. In 2013, Max founded Barlow and Barlow Design alongside his sister, interior designer Lucy Barlow. After five years of successful partnership, Max decided to form his own lighting studio in order to collaborate with other designers and architects.

Today, Maxwell Barlow Lighting is a thriving independent lighting consultancy, offering a tailored and comprehensive service for residential and commercial projects, both in the UK and internationally, in places such as Spain, Mallorca, Bahamas and Jamaica.

Our ethos is centred on collaboration. We are passionate about working closely with design teams, clients and contractors to strike the perfect balance between practicality and style. From boutique hotels to Caribbean villas, listed town houses to large country estates, we create exclusively tailored schemes that respect the heritage and style of the architecture and complement its interior features.

Our small, skilled team bring experience from a range of professional backgrounds to ensure that every aspect of our projects is completed to the highest standard. We take a flexible and personal approach, with emphasis on building lasting relationships with clients and suppliers so that we can deliver quality products with maximum value for money.

Bespoke fittings

We have a small collection of unique decorative lights which is currently going through an exciting expansion phase. To achieve the perfect decorative lighting specification on larger and commercial projects, we also offer a bespoke service delivering distinctive light fittings specifically designed for your needs. Working side-by-side with you, from drawing to production, we can work with our trusted network of manufacturers to create the perfect accompaniments to every scheme.

Lighting for the future

While our designs are informed by history and tradition, our real focus is on the future of lighting. The lights we specify are now 100% energy efficient LEDs and we remain committed to exploring the very latest developments in lighting technology to ensure that our designs are both beautiful and sustainable.

All of the British suppliers we work with now design their fittings so they can be repaired or recycled should they get damaged or fail. This means there is less waste on projects and less cost to the client.
